ODFC Lightning team is made up of dedicated players that are supported in their preparation by coaches and parents. From time to time a player, parent, or coach asks a question that would be useful to other players, parents or coaches. Below is a list of these questions asked and the answers provided:
Q. What is the ODFC Lightning development program?
Q. Will there be tryouts for the next season?
Q. What is indoor soccer and where is it played?
Q. If my daughter joins ODFC Lightning will she get playing time?
Q. What is the team's roster size?
Q. What is the team's "open practice" policy?
Q. What does it cost to be on the team?
Q. What is the uniform kit?
Q. What about the coaches?
The answers to these important questions are provided below:
Q. What is the Lightning development program?
A. The Lightning player development program is built around players learning through fun activities including:
- Team Practices - The Lightning practice 1 day a week out of season and 3 days a week in season. Practices last 1.5 hours and include skills development, match related and match condition activities. Players are encouraged to attempt new soccer skills and techniques during practices.
- Guest Professional Trainers - The trainers at Soccer Performance provide selected training sessions to teach advanced footskills topics during the season.
- Summer Camp - The Lightning participate in a week long summer camp. This summer we will be particpating in an overnight camp during the week of July 25th.
- Indoor Soccer - The team will participate in winter indoor soccer at the Dulles Sportsplex where the focus will be on developing the team's player movement both on and off the ball. The indoor season will be used to fill any roster gaps for the upcoming season by giving new players an opportunity to see if they can run with team Lightning!
- League Play - The team will play in the most appropriate level for the players as they develop. The Lightning current play in the Washington Area Girls Soccer League.
- Team events - include DC United and Washington Freedom games
- Tournament Play - The Lightning play two to three Virginia/Maryland/Pennsylvania tournaments each season.
Q. Will there be tryouts ?
A. The Lightning are very fortunate to have a roster of strong players who are dedicated to developing with the team into a competitive soccer team . During the season we will ask talented players to join us for our practices so they can improve and so that we can fill any gaps in our roster by inviting them to either guest play or to join the team.
Tryouts are held in June in order to fill open roster spots for the following seasonal year. Once offered a spot on the Lightning team, a player retains that spot for the full seasonal year as long as she continues to practice with the team and continues to demonstrate a respect for her teammates, and a respect for the game of soccer. Players are provided a written evaluation at the end of both the Fall and Spring season. At the end of the seasonal year in June the coaching staff may decide to invite select players back for the following year. All others will need to attend June tryouts to secure a roster spot for the following season. We are very proud of the players selected to play for the Lightning and the coaches, managers, and parents will do all that is necessary to support their success!
Q. What is indoor soccer and where is it played?
A. Indoor is played at the Dulles Sportsplex in Sterling, VA. The cost of the winter indoor season is included in the Spring/Fall season fees. Learn more about the Sportsplex at www.dullessportsplex.com
Q. If my daughter joins ODFC Lightning will she get playing time?
A. Yes. All players can expect to actively participate in the games. The coaches believe players learn from playing and problem solving during games and practices. Also we believe that the team as a whole is better off if all of the players are actively participants in all games. Toward that end, all of the Lightning team members show a commitment to learning the game of soccer and being good and respectful teammates. Being a member of team Lightning means you will be playing!
Q. What is the team's roster size?
A. The target roster size for the team is 14 players. Addition of players that would raise the team maximum beyond 14 would only be eligible to play in tournaments.
Q. What is the team's open practice policy?
A. The team will allow limited players who want to practice with the Lightning to join practices. This serves the purpose of building a contact list for when the team needs to fill a roster spot, providing the Lightning with new players with unique skills and abilities to practice against, filling out field for small sided games for practices, and introducing the Lightning team to the soccer player community. Parents if you want your player to join an open practice session to train for a day with us please contact our coach.
Q. What does it cost to be on the team?
A. We expect each player's share of our team's budget to be approximately $500 for per season. This covers the cost of uniforms, SPI soccer team trainer for one practice per week, 3 tournaments, player and coaching equipment, league fees to WAGS, and team fees to the ODFC.
Q. What is the uniform kit?
A. The team has selected Puma as the supplier for its uniform. Our team uniform kit will include two Puma Lightning jerseys, blue numbered shorts, 2 pairs of socks, backpack and a monogrammed team warm-up. The players have selected their personal favorite numbers.
Q. What about the coaches?
A. Pat Manno is USSF certified and has been coaching youth soccer for 10 years. He currently also coaches a U15 boys travel team in the NCSL. Pat has over 15 years experience coaching various youth and adult sports and is a member of the NSCAA. Wendy Massarelli has both played and coached the game. She has been a youth soccer coach for 5 years.
